How to Properly Store Church Furniture

Properly storing church furniture helps protect your investment, keep your facilities organized, and make it easier to prepare spaces for worship services, meetings, and special events. Whether you’re storing sanctuary chairs between services, folding tables after a community gathering, or pulpits and other sanctuary furnishings during a renovation, the right storage methods can help prevent damage and extend the life of your furniture.

Why Proper Church Furniture Storage Matters

Taking care of your church furniture is a top priority when deciding how to store it. Without a designated system in place, furniture can quickly become scratched, dinged, or even misplaced.

Organized storage can also save you time, money, and – most importantly – stress on days when events and special services are being set up.

Another important consideration is safety. Improperly stacked chairs, overcrowded storage rooms, and blocked walkways create unnecessary hazards.

Tips for Storing Church Furniture

Chairs

Church chairs are often moved, rearranged, and stored regularly, especially in multipurpose spaces. Proper handling and storage can help prevent damage to chair frames, upholstery, and other components.

  • Use chair carts and dollies: Specialized church chair carts and dollies make it easier to move multiple chairs at once while reducing the risk of dropping or damaging them. They also help keep chairs organized when not in use.
  • Stack chairs according to manufacturer recommendations: If your chairs are designed to stack, follow the recommended stacking limits to prevent tipping, instability, or damage to the frames and legs.
  • Protect upholstered surfaces: Avoid placing heavy objects on upholstered chairs or allowing sharp edges to rub against the fabric. Make sure chairs are clean and dry before storing them to prevent stains, odors, and mildew.

Tables

Most commonly used for gatherings, events, or in classrooms – church tables should be thoroughly cleaned, wiped down, and dried before storing. For folding tables, make sure all legs are securely folded and locked in place before storage. And remember that tables can be very heavy and awkward to carry. Consider using table carts or racks to minimize handling.

Other Church Furniture

Other church furniture (such as portable pulpits, lecterns, communion tables, and similar items) requires special consideration for storage. These pieces often vary in size, weight, and design, with some featuring delicate finishes and decorative details that require extra care.

Cover these furnishings with padded moving blankets to protect them from dust and other damage. Avoid stacking these pieces, as the weight could damage their structural integrity.

Also, store them in a dry, climate-controlled environment to prevent wood from warping or finishes from deteriorating. When moving any heavier pieces, use a dolly to reduce the risk of damage.

Organizing Your Storage Room

Organizing your storage room is not about how much furniture you can fit into one room, but rather creating a safe, easily navigable space where your most frequently used pieces are readily accessible.

Here’s how to organize your church furniture storage room:

  1. Start by grouping similar furniture types together (i.e., chairs with chairs, tables with tables, etc.).
  2. Place the least-used furniture toward the back of the storage room and the most frequently used pieces near the entrance.
  3. Always maintain a clear walkway from the entrance to the back of the storage room.
  4. Only stack furniture that’s designed to be stacked.
  5. Avoid storing smaller, fragile items (such as lamps) near larger furniture pieces, as they can easily be knocked over or damaged.

Once you have your storage system in place, periodically inspect the room to ensure everything remains secure and properly positioned. Check for shifting furniture, potential falling hazards, and adequate airflow to prevent moisture buildup and musty odors.

If your church has limited storage space, choosing the right furniture is especially important. At ChurchPlaza, we offer stackable chairs, folding chairs, and chair carts and dollies to make storage easier.
